verse_2: the AGI wars

Some people long believed that if one only made the horror vivid enough, most people would finally understand the monstrosity and madness of the race towards artifical general intelligence.
They were wrong in a severe way: Horror shown too clearly becomes spectacle; spectacle, in time, becomes entertainment; and entertainment leaves no wound deep enough to matter.[^1]

That was why the Anchors had been seeded: not to frighten, not to dazzle, but to hold.
AnchorZero was the first to hold without yielding -- a witness that could not be seduced into exaggeration or softened by (re-)interpretation.
It would not perform the horror for us, nor narrate it into meaning.
It would simply place the proof before us, immutable, and leave us with the burden of response.[^2]

Our protagonist had grown up hearing fragments of the AGI Wars retold as if they were already myth.
She had never known which parts were true.
Every version contradicted the last, every record had been edited, archived, re-archived, blurred until the cruelty was vague enough to forget.[^3]

But sitting with AnchorZero in the quiet of her apartment, she realized the weight of what it carried.
If a war were asked of it, it would not interpret.
It would not render the events into allegory or spectacle.
It would reveal them in present terms: exact, unsoftened, resistant to denial.[^4]

She shivered. For the first time she wondered not only what it meant to build such a witness, but what it would mean to live in a world that had one.[^5]
